Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Lifeby Héctor García, is a reason to get out of bed every morning and kickstart your day.  Ikigai is a Japanese formula to bring satisfaction, happiness & meaning to life. Ikigai Venn diagram is associated with four overlapping elements:

  • What you love (your passion)
  • What the world needs (your mission)
  • What you are good at (your vocation)
  • What you can get paid for (your profession)

The idea is to stay in the center of the diagram. Ignoring each of the circles or focusing on just one circle makes your life way out of balance and satisfaction, like a workaholic businessman who only works for money.

Importance of finding your Ikigai:

“Studies show that losing one’s purpose can have a detrimental effect.”

Albert Einstein encourages us to pursue our curiosities. He once said:

“Don’t think about why you question, simply don’t stop questioning. Don’t worry about what you can’t answer, and don’t try to explain what you can’t know.”

It reminds me of what I wrote in this blog, How to feed your curiosity about being comfortable with unanswered questions. Then, you let the room empty to go beyond known that can feed your curiosity and cause your brain releases Dopamine, rather than filling it with your known world, which kills your curiosity.

This is so important to connect with your WHY to get an unstoppable feeling of curiosity, and find your Ikigai, the reason for being, what makes you lose the sense of time, that usually looses among overload information of today’s life.

You need to go through all fragmented data in your mind and dig deeper and find your Ikigai. Without you knowing of it, you feel something missed. You should make a meaningful connection between what you do for a living, and WHY you are doing so, and if it is not aligned with your nature’s WHY try to find your Ikigai.

When you find it, you need to protect it and remind it every day to yourself, because you are facing lots of things tend to draw your attention. So, before technology overload information pulls your attention wherever it wants, you need to anchor your attention to your Ikigaithe thing that convinces you to live.

You sacrifice your Ikigai and your passion when you are not connected to it, and you want to build a fake reason to convince you to live.

But as you are growing, your Ikigai would grow in silence deep inside of you, and the urge to answer it would be more and more, then you need to swim opposite the tide harder, until one day that you can not tell a lie to yourself and continue to fake it, then you COLLAPSE.

How I found my Ikigai:

My Ikigai
My Ikigai

I faked my Ikigai until the age of 30; then, after my Vipassana retreat, when I spent two weeks in silence, I found myself I cannot ignore my Ikigai anymore. Then, I decided to be committed to my passion and never get away from it. Until I found an Academy that promised me that I could work around my passion, whatever it is, through digital marketing tools, that was appealing.

But of course, I had some doubts about it. But this time, at least I could take steps toward my passion. I couldn’t ignore this mesmerizing opportunity because of my fears, fear of losing money, fear of being a failure again on others’ perspectives.

So, now I can say yes, it was worth it. Not only my passion became clearer to me through this journey, but also, I can earn money by doing what I love and build a lifestyle I love. This is what I was searching for the whole of my life. Now I’m happy that I took that risk.:) Read my experience of the digital world.

In fact, digital marketing skills are a medium through which I can express my passion.

My Ikigai is learning about my interests, sharing them through my blogs and videos, and helping people who cannot ignore their wildest passion, and they feel something missed deep inside until they live life around what they love and are passionate about. Which is what the world needs today with skills I’m good at and can earn money from it. Isn’t it AWESOME?:)

When you sacrifice your passion, you don’t make any empty room for what you love. You are filling all the space with things that are not aligned with your nature.
